The wheel of the year is ever-turning, and as we approach the beginning of Summer, we eagerly await what the weather and the next few months have in store for us at Dimpsey. To help you enjoy the month of June, we have put together a list of things to get up to in South Somerset this June.
Yeovil Vegan Market – 6th June 2019
Always wanted to try a new range of foods, or perhaps want to try being Vegan? The Yeovil Vegan Market is a great place to start, with many food stalls as well as beauty and lifestyle stands to peruse!
People come and stay in our shepherd huts at Dimpsey for so many different reasons, some we get to hear about and some we don’t, but I thought that it would be nice to share a few of them with you over the next few weeks (without breaking any confidences, guest privacy is really important to us).
So firstly, let’s cover the one that you might not have expected (given that we mainly market to couples), which is a solo guest.
We’ve had quite a few over the years, sometimes staying a night or two and sometimes the whole week, I guess the stays are retreat-like in nature but the reasons for travelling solo have been really varied.
I absolutely loved the idea of the break our first solo traveller was on. Our guest was a lady who had been saying to her family for a long time that she just wanted a couple of days to herself, so for her birthday her daughters purchased her a voucher to stay at Dimpsey. Evidently we were chosen because we were a luxury destination offering seclusion, but we’re on hand if needed, which is reassuring if you’re staying on your own. Our guest was dropped off by her partner and was armed with food and books and lovely treats for her two day break, we showed her round and lit the fire for her and left her to her own devices. We discreetly checked from a distance that we could see smoke from the chimney every now and again, but that was it.
Just before departure time, I happened to see our guest and she was looking like the most relaxed person ever “Emma,” she said, “you’re the first person I’ve spoken to for 48 hours and it has been absolutely blissful, I have slept and eaten to suit myself, I’ve read 5 books and I have really just had the best time, I feel ready to take on the world!”
I have to admit to feeling a slight pang of jealousy about a break that just was away from everything for a while, I could really see the appeal, which only deepened when I opened the shepherd hut door to do the changeover and the bed just had the most divine set-up I have ever seen. All the pillows, blakets and sheepskins arranged to make the most perfect spot for sitting up in bed and reading…how lovely!
Other times, we have hosted photographers or people who are passing through the area and want somewhere a bit different to stay for a short break, they’re on their own and the fact that we have luxurious accommodation and a great place to eat called the Candlelight Inn just a mile away, really seems to hit the spot for this group of travellers. 4G is good and we have an office with wifi on the estate – so working quietly in beautiful surroundings is a big draw for them.
Talking of work brings me on to the solo travellers who book longer stays with us and that’s the people who are in the process of writing a book. Again, a luxury retreat, peace and quiet, stunning views and the lure of a hot-tub once you’ve hit your word count – all sound very appealing to me! The Blackdown Hills are an inspiring place to be, bird song to wake up to and stunning views to help those little procrastination breaks! I hear that the wordcount achieved here is pretty good, so we must be doing something right! Usually, people have a routine to write to and also want to get out and explore the country, so we help out with suggestions of places to visit and places to find good food. Our latest author had an electric bike with him, so we sorted charging and secure storage and in his break times he explored the Blackdown Hills – I’m thinking the electric nature of the bike was a good shout personally, some of the hills can be a bit steep if you’re pedalling!
So there you go, luxury retreats for the solo traveller.
Flowers, herbs and even our strawberry plant are beginning to fully bloom in the gorgeous sunlight here at Dimpsey. We have truly loved Spring coming into its own here and are getting out in the sunlight as much as possible! Sherborne Castle Country Fair – 27th May 2019
Another amazing family event is the Sherborne Castle Country Fair, where you can explore a range of stalls, including arts and crafts as well as spend the day with animals or even racing! With plenty of entertainment, music and food, it is a day not to be missed!
When Emma Warren of HiHo Silver reached out and asked if I would like to stay at Dimpsey Glamping after the HiHo & Co day, I was blown away. Not only was it the kindest gesture from her, but I was so excited as I had been following Dimpsey for a while now and it is so up my street as a little getaway.
I normally travel solo on most of my work trips and I have to admit to being someone that quite likes peace and quiet and a little tranquilty, rather than hotel stays bustling with people.
As I drew into Dimpsey I knew this was exactly what I was going to experience and I have to admit to letting out a little squeal of delight as I saw the twinkling lights for the hot tub barn and the amazing outdoor space including pizza oven that surrounds the Shepherds Hut. This really is your own little private hideaway.
Not to be outdone by the outdoor space the Shepherds Hut is styled to perfection, Emma and Andrew (Mr & Mrs Dimpsey) have thought of everything to make your stay amazing and truly memorable. As I walked into the hut I was greeted by the sound of relaxing music playing in the background, this was to set the tone for the rest of my stay.
Being February and a real chill to the air outside, my first port of call was the wood burner. It was all ready for me to just add a match to and within minutes the Shepherds Hut was a lovely cosy space, ready for me to enjoy some rest and relaxation. And perhaps a cheeky wee hot chocolate from the hot chocolate corner… yes really!! They have simply thought of everything!
I am a real country girl with a body clock programmed for first light, but let me tell you Dimpsey waved some kind of magic wand and each morning I woke after first light and was quite happy to snuggle down under the covers and just enjoy the tranquility of Dimpsey.
This really is a spot where you could loose yourself for a few days, I was actually quite sad that my days had already been planned out and I had such a hectic schedule. I would have quite happily sat outside soaking up the winter sun, wrapped in a blanket and reading a book whilst enjoying the sounds of nature and the blackdown hill views. Not to mention enjoying a long soak in the wood fired hot tub.
I really can’t recommend Dimpsey enough, whether you want to get a couple of days away by yourself for some R&R or fancy a lovely romantic break with your other half. Emma and Andrew have created the most beautiful retreat that is truly unique and I can’t wait to plan a return visit when I can just relax and enjoy the Dimpsey experience.
One of the things that made my heart sing at every turn during my Dimpsey stay were all the little details… Emma and Andrew have literally thought of everything to make your stay amazing and truly memorable.
From the moment you walk through the door at Dimpsey to the sound of relaxing music and the sight of afternoon tea laid out ready for your arrival, you know you are going to have the most amazing stay.
Little hand written notes, loving written, guide you through your stay at Dimpsey, at every turn you can tell the care and attention to detail that has gone into making everything just perfect for your break.
Fast forward to bed time and I open the bench to get my pillows and find they have even left me bed time tea sachets of relaxing tea, I may even have detected a scent of lavender on my pillows to ensure a sound nights sleep.
From my own little piece of heaven in the Hot Chocolate Corner. Not this isn’t just any old Hot Chocolate Corner, its packed full of luxury hot chocolate and marshmallows to make the perfect winter warmer after a days exploring.
To the handmade soaps infused with lavender from the Dimpsey Garden and stamped with the Dimpsey logo… is it mad to say I even took mine home, I loved it so much and I didn’t want the Dimpsey experience to end.

We’re super excited about our new Brace Hut, and can’t wait to welcome the winner. Situated in a secluded copse in Somerset, surrounded by stunning views, the new Brace is the ultimate in luxury with a copper slipper bath, double bed, kitchen, sitting area, shower room and more. You can find out more about our Yonder Brace Hut here.
In case you haven’t heard of Fairfax & Favor (we know you’ll love them as much as we do when you do!), here’s a bit more information about the beautiful boots that are being given away too…
The Nelson – For him
We’re ever so slightly smitten with the Nelson – aren’t you? With Fairfax & Favor’s signature navy elasticated detailing, these Chelsea style boots are sure to be a much loved boot in next to no time. They are made using leather with thick rubber/leather composite soles to make them true all-rounders – whether you’re in the city or country. They have sturdy heel and tongue pulls to make putting them on a breeze, and they have padded insoles for exceptional comfort too.
We’ve loved the Regina since it launched the Fairfax & Favor brand a few years ago. Originally, the Regina was only available in suede, but more recently a leather version has joined the boot family, and that’s what is being offered as the prize here.
The boots are packed with features that make them extra special. From the full leather linings to memory foam comfort insoles, 6cm stretch panels for the perfect fit to composite leather and rubber soles. Finished with scalloped edging at the top of the zips with interchangeable tassels, they’re just gorgeous!
